The Karaganda Zoo (Kazakh: Қарағанды хайуанханасы; Russian: Карагандинский зоопарк) is the state zoo of the city Karaganda in Kazakhstan. The Karaganda Zoo covers 107.5 acres (43.5 ha), and is one of the largest and oldest zoological parks in the Republic of Kazakhstan. It is best known as the home of the "talking" elephant Batyr until his death in 1993.
The exact age of Karaganda zoo is unknown, as many documents that might confirm the origin of the zoo have been lost. Most of what is known comes from employees of the zoo and townspeople who have visited the zoo.
